Makeup Revolution Retro Luxe Matte Liquid Lip Kit – Review and Swatches

Makeup Revolution are a brand that provide inexpensive dupes for higher end products and usually quality products for the price you pay.

The hype around these liquid lip kits appeared out of nowhere and everyone wanted to get their hands on them as dupes for the hard to get Kylie Lip Kits.

It took a couple of trips to my two local Superdrug’s until these were in stock, and when some finally appeared the colour selection wasn’t great but I picked one up I thought I might wear and couldn’t wait to test it out.

In this very familiar looking “kit” you get a liquid lip colour and a matching lip liner. The lip colour is a decent size tube, with a clear tube displaying the colour and a matte  rose gold lid, which is of course always blogger approved. The lip liner is matte black packaging with gold branding and a coloured tip.

The colour I chose was Reign which on the packaging looks like a nude pink, but on application it’s very much a rose pink colour.

I applied the lip liner first. It has a soft creamy texture and glides nicely on the lips with no pulling or tugging. So far so good.

The lip colour dons a straight doe foot applicator which made for easy application. You can easily draw a perfect line around the edges and fill in easily in the middle without making a mess. It dries almost instantly into a matte finish. Again, so far so good.

However, this is where it all goes pear shaped, as soon as it was applied I could feel it on my lips it felt really heavy. I was very aware it was there, almost like a film over my lips. I was struggling to describe how it felt and then I was discussing it with Rachael from Helpless Whilst Drying and she described it as cakey and that’s very much what it was.

I could feel it on my lips for the rest of the day and it went patchy and horrible when I ate any food. This is very contrary to other reviews I’ve read (bar Rachael’s) and I am very much in the minority with this opinion but at least I am not the only one!

It was very uncomfortable and not nice to wear at all. I am so glad I decided to only get one to try before investing in other colours.

At £6 it is cheap for a drugstore product, considering you get 2 products for that price making them £3 each, but I still think that was £6 wasted. I’m so gutted I didn’t like this as I really wanted too and there are some lovely colours in the range.

To be fair I will re-use the lip liner as it applies lovely, but I’m not even sure whether it sharpens or winds up as I have heard of others having this issue so we shall see what happens with that.

I have also never tried the Kylie Lip Kits so can’t comment on how they compare, but all I know is that I won’t be re-using this again!

Have you tried this lip kit yet? What did you think to it? I’d love to know in the comments below!

  1. I’m still in the cakey bandwagon, I’ve tried it twice now and can’t stand the feeling. I’ve found the liner the worst part about it (at least in the shade I picked up) and liked it slightly better without the liner although the wear time still wasn’t great! I think me and you are the only ones on the bad bandwagon here I haven’t seen a bad review from anyone else! I haven’t tried the other shade I picked up yet, I don’t know if I dare ha!xx

    1. Yes I know exactly what you mean!! I am the same!! Although I do disagree about the liner I thought that was ok it glided on softly for me and the lip colour didn’t have the same neat effect without it. But it’s so horrible to wear it’s not comfortable at all! Everyone else seems to be loving it! So strange! Haha no I’m so glad I only bought one instead of going for it and getting a few! xx

  2. Great review, as you say it’s been mainly positive about these but it’s good to see the other side too when it doesn’t work. I’ve been considering getting one of these as they seem to get a lot of good reviews but I’ve seen a couple of negative ones popping up now. I’m still tempted but not something I’ll be rushing to get any more.

    1. It’s difficult isn’t it when so many people are on different sides of the fence! It’s cheap enough that it probably isn’t a massive loss if you try one and don’t like it, different people have had different experiences! Thanks for reading 🙂 xo

  3. I bought several shades and found Reign to be the worst one of the shades I got…. I’ve been looking for any reviews that were similar to my experience!
I liked Regal best, but the lipliner in Glory was broken… not great 😦
Hopefully the other shades are better!

  4. I decided to get it in reign and I admit that it’s quite sticky.. so I just line and fill in my lips with the pencil (it can sharpen in a sharpener, I use the UD one) and use a light coat of lipstick and hold my mouth open a few min and it seems to not be as sticky then. I can’t afford the higher quality Kylie lip kits at the moment now unfortunately so I’ll have to settle for the crap quality but I do like the color.

      1. I also started to dab on translucent setting powder with my finger to get rid of the stickiness. I love the color but I don’t want to give it up so easily lol

  5. Its a shame the formula isn’t very good as otherwise the product had potential. I’m a Fashion & Beauty blogger from London, would be super awesome if you could check out 🙂

  6. You actually weren’t in the minority … the reviews on Ulta.com weren’t great for the matte kits. Apparently, this shade was the most problematic and I agree it feels heavy and crumbles when eating. *GOOD NEWS!! Makeup Revolution has reformulated these and they are supposedly much better. The new formulas have a different graphic on the box.

I have 2 of the original matte lip kits (plus 1 metallic and 1 gloss, which are great), and I love the shades so much I played around with them and found a solution. Apply a thin layer of Lip Balm, give it 10 minutes to sink in and wipe away any excess. Line and fill in lips with the pencil and then add a thin layer of the liquid lipstick. It makes such a huge difference – feels weightless and doesn’t crumble off.

    1. After reading this, I went directly to my local ulta and they did indeed have the new formulation after asking a clueless employee who wasn’t listening to what I had to say about the previous formula being sticky with her not mentioning a thing about it and instead blamed me on user error, I decided to give it another try. Got it in reign again (perfect work and everyday color) and it truly has indeed been reformulated. It’s less sticky than before, which seemed to just stay sticky and tacky like a cheap fake kylie lip kit (which I’ve heard about) but now it sets fully matte and there’s no stick, only when it’s drying which takes 30 seconds to a min or so. I’m glad I gave it another chance cause the finish is amazing now.
