Calming the mind and loosening the body | An introduction to Hot Pod Yoga

We all know the hardship that life’s stresses can have on the body. Being hunched over a desk and running around everywhere and constantly thinking about your ever growing to do list can all take its toll on our well being.

Enter Hot Pod Yoga which takes yoga to the next (hot) level with a flow of postures in a heated inflatable Pod to supercharge the yoga experience, aiming to calm the mind and loosen the body.

My good friend Molly kindly organised a bloggers session on a Saturday afternoon at Hot Pod Yoga Nottingham for us all to give it a whirl.

Hot Pod Yoga

We were greeted by the lovely Sarah who owns the Nottingham branches and she talked us through what we can expect.

The class takes place in a cocoon shaped inflatable pod that fits 20 people inside. It’s heated to 37 degree with Dyson air flow heaters and with the help of a humidifier at 70% has a rain forest feel which we were told is the perfect conditions to loosen the body and the mind.

Sarah began by explaining how the class would work and stressed that every person is entirely different and that one persons body won’t move the same way as another would. There is no judgement in the pod and she affirmed we should focus on how our own body moved and felt during the moves and not on what others were doing.

She told us how hot yoga is beneficial to stress and tight muscles – anyone hunched over a desk, on a train, doing revision, you name it and hot yoga can aid in relaxing the body and loosening the muscles.

The method of yoga they use is called Vinyassa and is a flow of movement where each move is reached easily from the previous in a flowing action. For example you move from downward dog position (don’t worry if you don’t know the moves, I’ll get to this later) which is on hands and knees with the back arched to the floor by leaning forward into a plank position, lowering the hips, arms, chest and head – you don’t just flop down there straight away you move your body in flowing movements to get there.

You aren’t expected to be a yoga expert – the instructor explains the moves to anyone that doesn’t know and also does them in front of you so you don’t have to memorise them! Sarah also walked round the class helping anyone who wasn’t quite getting it and encouraging those that nailed the moves – she was so encouraging and motivating it was lovely to work with.

I’m not gonna lie – it’s SWEATY! Very very sweaty I’m not sure I’ve ever dripped that much  but this is totally normal for hot yoga and everyone is in the same (sweaty) boat! You are placed on a mat (bring your own towel, plus an extra to mop the forehead, trust me) with the instructor at the front.

She also introduced us to what she called “China Gel” which is a cooling gel full of herbal ingredients and essential oils like lavender oil, witch hazel, and aloe vera and she went round the room and applied it to the shoulders and back of those who wanted it. She also gave a little massage at the same time and it was a welcome cooling effect in such a hot environment!

It does feel very tropical in the pod and you feel like you’ve been transported to the rainforest. The heat aids stretching and relaxes the muscles a lot easier than if you were doing normal yoga.

It really does leave you feeling refreshed and calm and even though you are a sweaty mess you feel like you’ve had a good sesh! There are also lovely showers and changing rooms decorated with colourful images of Nottinghamshire which is such a lovely touch.

At the end of our session we were also treated to a fresh raw juice from Wholesome Juicery Notts which was so cooling and so welcome after our sweaty sesh! We had the Skin Glow juice which comes with the motto “shake, taste, glow” and it was absolutely delicious.

So I hope I’ve covered everything you might need to know about my introduction to hot pod yoga – basically don’t worry if you’ve never done yoga in your life, the instructors in the pod are so welcoming, helpful and lovely and encourage no judgement and focusing on yourself only! Give it a go what have you got to lose?!

A number of sessions run each day to cover all lifestyles from early mornings to late nights and weekends as well.

  1. Such an interesting concept!
Not sure how I feel about being so sweaty and doing yoga… I’d probably slip on my own pool of sweat and hurt myself. 😆
