Why you need to try the Spring Menu at Pitcher and Piano, Derby

Pitcher and Piano is a place that you know you can go anywhere in the UK and get a consistent experience – tasty food, good drinks and a quirky and beautiful decor. The branch in Derby is no exception, and now they have a new Spring menu. So if you’re out and about near Derby, or have another Pitcher and Piano near you, you should give the new Spring Menu a try.

I was very kindly invited to bring along a guest (much to Jay’s excitement, he loves getting perks from my blog) to try the new Spring Menu at the Derby branch of Pitcher and Piano*. Nestled within the centre, you could almost miss it if you weren’t looking for it as it’s hidden inside a “normal” flat shop front.

But don’t be fooled by it’s size, the restaurant and bar extends way back and even has a beautiful roof top terrace as well. We were invited to try a cocktail each and a three course meal, what a treat for a Friday night!

As it was a Friday, they were busy, but the atmosphere was buzzing without being too loud. Our waitress was lovely and attentive despite it being busy and we felt well looked after.

The drinks menu is baffling and the choices are vast – they have a dedicated gin section, an abundance of house cocktails and a selection of sundowners, the perfect accompaniment to a spring evening.

The decor is beautiful and rustic, consisting of exposed brick and worn wood, beams and high ceilings covering in fairy lights and mismatched furniture.

I went for a Lavender Fizz, which was a mixture of lavender gin, prosecco, sugar syrup, lemon juice and cloudy lemonade. Jay went for a Mr Collins Cup, which is rum based (as per his usual order) with Sailor Jerrys Spiced Rum, pineapple juice, ginger liqueur, lime juice, bitters, sugar syrup and soda. It tasted very good and I might have nicked a fair amount of it..

For starters we shared halloumi fries and lemongrass tempura chicken. Both were coated in breadcrumbs and batter and both tasted delicious. So far so good!

For our mains, I opted for a buttermilk chicken burger and straight fries, whilst Jay went for a halloumi and pulled pork burger with sweet potato fries and coleslaw. Both were delicious and as usual we split our fries so we each had some of both and they were both equally as tasty.

When it comes to desert, we usually like the same things and can split two so we get to try both. This was no exception, except that narrowing it down was hard as we wanted literally everything on the menu! We opted for a chocolate brownie and a sticky toffee pudding.

Controversially, the sticky toffee pudding was my favourite out the two, it was light and sweet and delicious. Usually the brownie wins my affection and it was a close second, warm and dense and melted in the mouth. Can you tell I’m a tad desert obsessed?!

We were still there about 9pm when they started to turn the music on and there were some banging tunes being played, but we were both so full from dinner (story of my life) that we didn’t hang around too long to see it into the night.

I always find Pitcher and Piano is a great hybrid as you can opt for a nice meal and a few drinks, or a full on night on. It’s fab for both and I love the atmosphere in there, no matter which one I go to.
