Festive baking | Making a gingerbread house 

I love gingerbread and it’s a festive must for me to make a batch before Christmas. This year I decided to take it one step further and do a gingerbread house!

I am no way a self pronounced baker nor do I pretend to be – I’m very amateur and make  mistakes but I enjoy it and have fun so that’s all that matters to me!

I purchased the cutters for the house from Lakeland for around £5 here which also had a recipe on and easy to follow instructions.

Altogether it took around 4 hours to bake and let it cool and put together.

We also made some extra shapes and characters to decorate!  

Here’s what it turned out like –  

Heres what you’ll need –

  • Gingerbread recipe mix/ingredients
  • Icing sugar and water
  • Icing pen(s) we used white and green
  • Rainbow drops
  • Sieve
  • Spoon

Here’s what to do-

Once you have cooked your gingerbread and let it cool you can begin to assemble.

You put the house together with icing sugar mixed with very little water as your ‘glue’ so it’s very thick.

We positioned the house on a glass chopping board diagonally so you get a good angled view and can’t see where the chimney has been stuck down.

You stick the windows and doors to the walls and let dry. Ice the Windows so it looks like snow has settled in the corners. Make sure you have a steady hand when icing and try and do it all in one go so there isn’t any gaps!

You then ‘glue’ the bottom of the walls and stick it to your chosen surface. Using teacups, mugs or glasses you prop up the walls until they begin to set. You put icing sugar along the sides to stick the walls together.

Then glue the top of the walls and the bottom of the roof as well as the top of the roof so it sticks to itself and hold it in placed for a good 5 minutes to set.

Now here the instructions told us to wait half an hour before continuing but we are impatient and didn’t do this (oops) but it turned out fine! (disclaimer – don’t blame me if it doesn’t work for you 😉 )

Then glue the chimney together, decorate so it looks like snow has fallen on it and stick it on to the other side of the roof you don’t want to be seen.

Then pipe stripes acrossthe roof to make it look thatched (or add rainbow drops all over it if you have enough)

We didn’t have many rainbow drops so just added one to the front to look like a clock.

Use the glue to stick the tree down (iced with a green icing pen) and put something small like one of your icing nozzles behind it for support

Using a sieve, pour icing sugar around the chopping board and a little over your house to look like snow. Using a small flat end like the end of your icing pen, drag the icing away from the door to make a path.

And voila there you have it! It’s a lot of fun and actually fairly simple to do!

    This looks so cute! It also looks like so much fun… I might try this out next year, haha.
